Larry Witzling Recognized for Lifetime of Planning Achievements
At a dinner award event, Dr. Witzling will be honored with other standout members of the Wisconsin building and design industry. Larry was nominated by long-time colleague and fellow-professor, Bob Greenstreet. Among the highlights of Dr. Witzling’s nomination are recognition of his 40 years of experience as an urban planner and visionary in the Milwaukee area – as well as the nation as a whole. He has worked under four governors, three mayors, five County executives, at least six Development Commissioners, as well as four Deans and five Chancellors at University Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His work and vision is truly engrained in the fabric of our region.
Before his work with GRAEF, Dr. Witzling opened the eyes of Milwaukee’s planning industry as owner of Planning & Design Institute. He pioneered new urbanist development techniques and touched communities from Mequon to Kenosha and West Bend to West Allis.
Larry’s touch has reached far beyond the borders of Wisconsin when he was been asked on several occasions to be an adviser for national design competitions – this included – judging the submitted designs and selecting the winner. One most prominent was the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York.
Dr. Witzling has authored more than 20 feature articles about planning and urban design and co-authored two books. He has also devoted 40 years to educating and inspiring students at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee with enthusiasm and insightfulness. 2017 has already been a banner year for Larry, when he received the prestigious Planning Pioneer Award from the American Planning Association. We are so proud to call Dr. Witzling our friend and co-worker and congratulate him a lifetime of worthwhile achievements!
