John Kissinger Day Proclaimed in Milwaukee!
John stepped down from his volunteer role as chairman of the board of directors of the Workforce Development agency on that day. He will continue to stay involved with MAWIB, however, as Vice Chairman and Treasurer. In his remarks before the board while awarding this proclamation, Mayor Barrett thanked John for his volunteer service in the area of Workforce Development He said he was one of the hardest working board chairs he had seen, and that he was “the superstar of his agency appointments”. John was also lauded by incoming Board Chair Don Layden, and was presented with a special plaque from the Mayor and Earl Buford, the President of the MAWIB, commemorating his service.
MAWIB is one of 11 Workforce Development Boards in the State of Wisconsin. These boards work closely with the US Department of Labor, The State of Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, and the Business Community to provide training and job placement assistance for adult and youth workers to find meaningful employment. MAWIB assists incumbent workers to improve their skills, dislocated workers to acquire new skills and employment after losing their jobs due to layoffs or business closures, transitional workers to get the training they need to get into the job market, in some cases overcoming impediments such as criminal records or substance abuse issues, and youth workers find summer or year round employment and begin their journey into the labor market.
Under John’s leadership, MAWIB was able to transition its leadership with a new CEO to replace the retired Don Sykes. The agency was also able to forge stronger ties with the Milwaukee area business community and groups such as the Milwaukee Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce (MMAC) and the Greater Milwaukee Committee (GMC). During John’s 5 year term, the agency oversaw the employment of over 8,000 young workers in its summer Earn and Learn Program, including a number that GRAEF employed during that span. John’s main goal while at MAWIB was to more closely align Workforce Development with Economic Development.
In addition to his volunteer work for MAWIB, John currently serves on the Campaign Cabinets for the United Way of Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, The United Performing Arts Fund of Milwaukee, The Dean’s Cabinet at the College of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, The Board of Directors of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee County, and the Facilities Committee of the Milwaukee Art Museum.
